Beginning operations as a landscape contractor, the company pioneered the Australiana landscape theme by introducing innovation and many new products to the industry. This innovation saw ANL successful in the procurement of specialised projects such as the Port Botany foreshore rehabilitation and later the Kooragang Island reclamation. The recognition and experience gained in these and subsequent projects has established the company as a major landscape contractor
ANL continued to expand its operations in the commercial sector by successfully completing many major projects such as the IBM Headquarters, Chinese Gardens at Darling Harbour, Sydney’s Parallel Third Runway, and Olympic projects such as the Sydney International Equestrian Centre at Horsley Park.
The period 1980’s and 1990’s was a period of unparalleled growth in the company’s landscape division and set the foundation for ANL’s reputation as a supplier of quality horticultural products. This has been continuously reinforced with its supply of organic soil and mulches for the majority of the major large-scale projects undertaken in Sydney including the Circular Quay redevelopment and First Fleet Park
In the early 80’s the company consolidated its composting operations and invested significantly into the development of a new pine bark grading and composting facility at Badgerys Creek. In each of the first two years of production at this new facility ANL processed over 100,000 m3 of feedstock.
In 1990, ANL revolutionised the composting of organic waste through the purchase of purpose built machinery from the US, bringing unparalleled efficiencies to its composting operations. Today the Badgerys Creek site far exceeds the early process statistic, with production of organic composts exceeding 600,000m3 annually.
In 1995, ANL purchased Sherringhams Nursery, at North Ryde providing a comprehensive range of landscape and garden products under one roof. This set the scene for expansion into the retail marketplace with similar nursery and bulk retail outlets now at Terrey Hills and Seven Hills, serving Sydney’s metropolitan area.
In 2005, ANL expanded its compost manufacturing footprint with the opening of an exciting regional composting facility in Blayney. This site coordinates both large scale composting and a Land Application Division operating agricultural and vineyard spreaders supplying biosolids or compost to agricultural markets.
This regional facility also supports our Central West landscape supplies outlets at Orange and latest Bathurst.

In Australia, 13 million tonnes of organic material are disposed to landfill each year.
When disposed to landfill, organic material decomposes and generates methane, a gas that is at least 25 times more potent than carbon dioxide in our atmosphere, trapping heat and contributing to climate change.
Since our inception some forty years ago, Van Schaik’s Bio Gro has been a leading innovator, working in partnership with companies and local councils all throughout Australia to achieve optimum recovery of organic material.
This recovered material doesn’t just get dumped somewhere – out of sight, out of mind – to decompose on its own.
We capture the full potential of the resource stream by professionally processing the material into a variety of high quality products, tailored for a wide range of horticultural and agricultural applications.
